The Story
Hawaiian Chili Pepper came from a freedive off Haleʻiwa with Kalihi, a well-known resident tiger shark who apparently never got the memo that sharks are supposed to look intimidating.
She had swagger. Side-eye. Zero urgency. The kind of presence that makes you stop what you’re doing and watch.
I built the painting around that energy instead of trying to make her serene. Warm color, metallic flashes, texture and movement give the whole piece a little heat—because soft blue water was never going to cut it for her.
Kalihi doesn’t disappear into the background, and neither does this piece.
