The Story
I See You was inspired by Kalihi, a tiger shark I’ve encountered more than once off Oʻahu’s North Shore.
What stays with me every time isn’t fear. It’s that look.
Tiger sharks can be incredibly calm and curious, and Kalihi has this way of watching you that feels less like aggression and more like assessment. She’s not rushing. She’s not performing. She’s just fully there.
That presence is what I wanted in this piece—the moment fear starts getting replaced by fascination.
This painting is part of my Peeka Boo, I See You series, built around the side of sharks that rarely makes the highlight reel: personality, curiosity, restraint, and individuality.
“Kalihi taught me that not all power is loud. Some of it just watches, waits, and moves with complete confidence.” ~Kristy
