The Story
Man Eater started with the contradiction.
A massive whale shark. A lone woman beside it. A title that sounds threatening when the actual moment is anything but.
Whale sharks have this ridiculous combination of scale and gentleness that never stops getting me. They can completely dominate the water around you without acting like they have anything to prove.
That’s what I wanted this piece to hold: strength without aggression, softness without weakness, and the weird little disconnect between what we’re taught to fear and what we actually experience when we get close enough to look for ourselves.
The title is me being slightly obnoxious about it.
“They call her Man Eater. Truth is, neither of them are.” ~Kristy
